Facebook collects a lot of information about its users and under its terms of service, it’s users own their own data. Under its terms of service, Facebook also can sell the information that’s put into Facebook by its users to third parties for advertising and other purposes. When Facebook sold customer data to Cambridge Analytica, Cambridge Analytica used it in a political campaign, and that use was highly controversial. Facebook ended up in a very bitter dispute with Cambridge Analytica and it also came to the attention of the authorities and ended up as a great embarrassment to everyone involved.
