What Is a Data Breach?

A data breach is when someone hacks into a confidential database without any legal right to be there and steals the information in it. There have been major data breaches in the past decade or so. One of the largest was the Equifax breach, hundreds of millions of bits of information about customers, credit information was breached there. Of course, there have been breaches in the US Government involving hackers by foreign governments. The major concern, of course, is that confidential information has fallen into the wrong hands. In the event of a data breach, the entity that suffered the breach is required by law to report it, usually to the attorney general of the state and to the senior police officers and other law enforcement officials.
